- KU faculty, staff and students were honored for excellence
in international education during the annual awards ceremony
of Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars on
April 17.
Andrew Debicki, dean of the graduate school and international
programs, received the outstanding faculty member award. Debicki,
distinguished professor of Spanish and Portuguese, has helped
make the Department of Spanish and Portuguese one of the top
departments in its field in the country. Author or editor of
14 books, recipient of many research awards, including two Guggenheim
fellowships and a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship,
Debicki has contributed to deepening KU's connections to Spain
and the Hispanic world. Debicki retires as dean Aug. 31 to return
to teaching full time.
Lynne Vanahill, associate director of international student services,
received the outstanding staff member award. Vanahill advises
as many as 750 international students annually, meeting with
each multiple times. She was cited for her professionalism, positive
attitude and patience, for her leadership roles in immigration
matters, the office Web site, managing the international scholarship
program and advising international students. She serves on several
campus committees and regularly presents workshops at state and
regional conferences.
Two student members of the KU chapter of Phi Beta Delta, Anna
Lambertson, Sabetha senior majoring in French and in Spanish,
and Myriam Vuckovic, German doctoral student in American studies,
also were honored for their strengths in international studies.
