Course repetition policy on path to
final approval
Carefully crafted proposal awaits final decision

Students and faculty members are eagerly awaiting the administration's final decision regarding amendments to the course repetition policy.

Jim Carothers, faculty executive committee chair, said that he was unsure when the administration would reach its final decision, but that he doubted the policy could be implemented sooner than fall 2001.

KU has been discussing revisions to its course repetition policy for about 15 years. This time, Carothers said, changes will most likely be approved.

"I think this proposal was more carefully crafted than some of the earlier ones," Carothers said. "It had been crafted with the knowledge that there would be certain objections."

Although a few faculty members voiced concerns about the policy, most agreed that the policy would be beneficial for students.

The policy, passed by the University Council Feb. 24, would enable students to make up for past errors. Students who earn a D or lower in a course would be allowed to retake the course and to have the failing grades removed from their grade-point averages. Students who earn a C or higher in a course would have the option, with permission from the dean of their college or school and the chair of the department offering the course, to retake the course for a higher grade. However, both grades would be calculated into the student's grade-point average

Under the present policy, students may retake a course for a higher grade, with the permission of their dean and chair, but the original grade is factored into the grade-point average.
