CLAS award honors advisers

Three KU faculty members on the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences advisory board have received the 1999-2000 J. Michael Young Academic Adviser Award.

Award winners are Robert Antonio, professor of sociology, for the social sciences; Craig E. Martin, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology for the natural sciences and mathematics; and Lloyd L. Sponholtz, associate professor of history, for the humanities.

They were honored at a reception May 5 at the Adams Alumni Center.
The $500 cash award recognizes advisers in the College who have given their time and attention to helping students make good decisions about their educational and career goals.

Established in 1991, the award recognizes the late J. Michael Young, a KU professor of philosophy and director of the KU Honors Program.

Undergraduate students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences make nominations for the J. Michael Young award. The College's Alumni Club Advisory Board chooses the winner.

Antonio joined KU's faculty in 1971. Antonio has a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind.

Martin joined KU's faculty in 1980. He has a Ph.D. in botany from Duke University, Durham, N.C. At KU, he has received a 1996 W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence and the 1997 H. Bernerd Fink Award for outstanding classroom teaching.
Sponholtz joined KU's faculty in 1967. He earned a doctorate in history from the University of Pittsburgh.
