- A book collection titled "Vegetarian Lifestyle"
was one of the winners of the 44th Annual Snyder Book Collecting
Contest at KU.
The contest, one of the oldest student book collecting contests
in the country, is sponsored by Mrs. Joseph A. Snyder of Mission
Hills and the Mt. Oread Bookshop, and organized by the University
Libraries.
The contest encourages students to explore the books on their
shelves and to uncover connections and purpose in what might
otherwise be considered random book buying. Collections are judged
on concept and vision more than completeness or monetary value.
First and second prizes were awarded recently in both undergraduate
and graduate divisions.
Among undergraduates, Sarah Hoskinson, religious studies and
English major from Burrton, placed first for her collection "Vegetarian
Lifestyle," and Adam Powell, philosophy major from New Castle,
Del., placed second for "Contemporary Experimental and Small
Press Literature."
Among graduate students, Michael W. Hancock, Lawrence graduate
student in English, placed first for "Editions of Christina
Rossetti's Goblin Markets: 1862-1997," and Michael F. Foubert,
Olathe graduate student in education, placed second for "Giving
Voice to Silence: the Gay and Lesbian Press, 1950-1975."
