Campus safer in 1999
Criminal offenses down nine percent

Reported criminal offenses on the KU campus continue to decline with a nine percent drop in 1999, KU's Public Safety Office announced recently.

The office received 1,094 reports of criminal offenses in 1999, compared to 1,206 in 1998 and 1,438 in 1997.

Property crimes, such as burglary and theft, are the most reported crimes on campus. However, both categories declined substantially last year-24 percent fewer burglaries and 26 percent fewer thefts.

Violent crimes, such as rape and robbery, continue to be a small percentage of crimes reported on the KU campus. One rape and two robberies were reported in 1999.

Crime statistics for 1999, 1998 and 1997 are available on the Public Safety Office's Web site at http://www.ukans.edu/~kucops. The Web site also offers a daily log of all reported crimes, a listing of educational programs the office offers and an overview of the office's duties and responsibilities.

Sgt. Troy Mailen, KU Public Safety Office spokesman, said the combined efforts of the Public Safety Office, the university administration and the university community contributed to the drop in reported crime.

"The employees of the Public Safety Office work 24 hours a day to provide a safe environment on campus," Mailen said. "They are only able to do this with the support from the administration and the active participation of the community.

"This can be best achieved if all members of the university community are aware of the crimes that occur on this campus and what they can do to protect themselves," Mailen said.
