Vannaman picked for council
Madi T. Vannaman, assistant director of human resources,
will serve a three-year term on the national TIAA-CREF Advisory
Council. The 15-member group meets quarterly in New York City.
Vannaman will help design, develop and improve the products and
services offered by TIAA-CREF to participating institutions.
Millennial violence researcher to speak at KU
A Loyola University religious studies professor and author
of books on millennialism and violence will speak at KU Monday
and Tuesday, April 17 and 18.
Catherine Wessinger, professor of the history of religions and
chair of the religious studies department at Loyola, will speak
on "Millennialism and Law Enforcement at Y2K" at 7:30
p.m. Monday, April 17, in the Kansas Room of the Kansas Union.
Her speech follows the annual banquet and awards ceremony for
KU's religious studies department.
Wessinger will lecture on the Branch Davidians at 7 p.m. Tuesday,
April 18, in 108 Smith Hall.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Ray Nichols memorial set
Alumni, faculty, staff and friends are invited to gather
at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Memorial Campanile for a
remembrance to celebrate the life of Raymond Nichols.
Nichols, who died Oct. 12, 1999, at age 95, was KU's 12th chancellor.
The event's rain location is Spencer Research Library.
Runners to hustle for Hilltop
On April 29, runners of all ages will be hustling up the
hill to raise equipment money for Hilltop Child Development Center.
Hilltop is sponsoring the Hilltop Hustle, a run and walk fund-raiser
open to all age groups. Participants can participate in one-
or five-kilometer runs or walks. Medals will be presented to
the first three finishers in each age division in the 5K. Every
1K finisher 12 and under will receive a medal. Hand-thrown pottery
will be awarded to the top adult male and female winners.
Hilltop executive director Pat Pisani said that Francis Sporting
Goods is the main sponsor of the event, but many companies, individuals
and university-related groups, including the Public Safety Office,
the Kansas Unions and Coca-Cola are helping with the race.
"We have had wonderful donations of refreshments, prizes
and cash contributions," Pisani said.
Registration costs are $12 per person ($15 per person after April
10) for the 5K event, and $4 per person ($10 per family) for

Program to honor outstanding women
Outstanding women in the KU community will be honored at
the Annual Women's Recognition Program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April
18, in the Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union.
The keynote speaker will be Jill Docking, vice president for
investments at A.G. Edwards and Sons Inc.
Awards will also include Outstanding Woman Staff Member and Outstanding
Woman Educator. All honorees will be inducted into the KU Women's
Hall of Fame.
The program is sponsored by the Commission on the Status of Women
and the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center. For additional
