- James Pottorff Jr., a Kansas native and graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law, has been named general counsel for KU, Chancellor Robert E. Hemenway announced today. Pottorff's appointment is effective June 1.
- "I'm very pleased at Jim's appointment and delighted to see him return to Kansas," Hemenway said. "He is very highly regarded, and I know he will play an important role on the university's management team as we take on the challenges and opportunities facing higher education in
the 21st century."
- Pottorff currently is assistant director of land warfare in the Oceans Law and Policy Department of the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.,
serving as Army liaison for legal issues and teaching classes in the international law of armed conflict.
- A colonel in the U.S. Army, Pottorff has more than six years of general counsel experience, including university and law school settings, and
14 years of experience managing legal support for organizations.
- "KU is a distinguished institution of higher education, with great leadership and an exciting future," Pottorff said. "It's always been my hope
to return to Kansas, so this appointment is like a dream come true."
- Pottorff replaces Ann Victoria Thomas, who retired from KU in December after serving as general counsel for 19 years.
- A native of Douglass, Pottorff earned his juris doctorate from the KU School of Law in 1984, where he was on the Moot Court Council and
served as articles editor for the KU Law Review.
- He holds a bachelor's degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., a master's from the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.,
a master of laws degree from the Judge Advocate General's School in Charlottesville, Va., and a master's in human resources management
from Pepperdine University. He also earned a diploma in Management, Operations and Strategy from the U.S. Army Command and
General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth.
- Before assuming his post at the Naval War College in June 1999, Pottorff held positions as staff judge advocate (general counsel) for the
10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army at Fort Drum, N.Y., deputy general counsel at West Point and assistant dean for the Army Judge
Advocate General's School in Charlottesville. He also was chief of the criminal law division at the Office of Staff Judge Advocate at Fort
Riley.
