KU was featured in a pair of national magazines recently. Forbes' "100 Most Powerful Women," left, featured KU grads Sheila Bair, Cynthia Carroll and Linda Z. Cook. The September issue of VFW Magazine featured several student veterans on thecover and in an article about provisions of the new GI Bill.

Student Union Activities is hosting its second carnival for KU students, staff and faculty from 8 p.m. to midnight Sept. 27 in the parking lot of the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. Rides, games and carnival food will be available to anyone with a KUID. Scores of people turned out for last year's carnival, above.

Kat Steward of Wichita has updated her tattoo to commemorate KU basketball becoming the national champions. The piece also features a Jayhawk on the left, basketball on the right, Allen Fieldhouse in the center and a banner that reads “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” in the bottom center.

RESEARCH MATTERS: Daphne Fautin, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, is a commissioner for the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. "It's the Supreme Court of zoological nomenclature. We make decisions not on whether a particular species is really valid, whether it exists or not - that's a subject of scientific debate. But whether it has followed the rules, the laws the international code of scientific nomenclature so that it can be considered scientifically available and it actually applies to an entity that we can identify," Fautin said.
