Sergi Shandarin, professor of physics and astronomy, attended SF08 Cosmology Summer Workshop held June 30-July 18 in Santa Fe, N.M. Shandarin gave a talk titled "Cosmic Web in Redshift Space" and led a discussion session titled "Reality of Dark Matter Caustics." Additionally, Shandarin visited the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris July 15-Aug. 4. There, he worked on a research project related to the structure of dark matter caustics and presented a seminar titled "Reality of Dark Matter Caustics."
Maria Velasco, assistant professor of art, is presenting her edible creation "Isn't It You" at the "In Residence: Recent Projects from Sculpture Space" exhibit from Sept. 5 to Oct. 18 at Project Space in New York City. The exhibit is presented by the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and Sculpture Space. The artwork shown is in the form of edible poems served on trays. Velasco was selected along with seven other artists from across the United States to be part of the exhibition this fall.
Nikhat Ghouse, social sciences librarian for anthropology, global indigenous nations studies and religious studies, presented her poster titled "It's Your Library Too: Reach Out to Diverse Populations" at the American Library Association's annual conference June 30 in Anaheim.
Frances Devlin, coordinator for reference services, and John Stratton, coordinator for digital collections, presented a poster session, "No Two Directions Are Ever the Same: Transforming Reference Services," at the Library Assessment Conference Aug. 4-7 at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Bill Farris, assistant director of information technology, presented "Cellular VoIP and WiFi - Is It for You?" at the Association for Information Communications Technology Professionals in Higher Education annual conference July 14 in Las Vegas. Lissa Lord, reference librarian at the Regents Center Library on the Edwards Campus, presented "The Tao of Scholarly Research on the Internet Updated for Web 2.0" at the Summer Institute of Distance Learning and Instructional Technology held July 31 at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park.
Regents Center Library Director Lyn Wolz's "Ballads" appears in the recently published "The Storytelling Encyclopedia."
Brian Rosenblum, scholarly digital initiatives librarian, presented "Developing New Skills and Expertise to Support Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communication" at the 74th International Federation of Library Associations World Library and Information Congress held Aug. 13 in Quebec City, Canada.
Deborah Ludwig, assistant dean of KU Libraries, and Sherry Williams, interim head of Kenneth Spencer Research Library, presented "Finding Common Ground: Various Approaches to Building Digital Libraries from Tech Cool to Strategic" at the Mid-Atlantic Digital Library Conference held July 9 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.
Van Kelly, associate professor and chair of the Department of French and Italian, participated in the "Summer Research Workshop: Vichy and The Holocaust in France Since 1990" at the United States Holocaust Museum and Memorial, Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, held July 7-19 in Washington, D.C. Kelly presented a paper titled "Jorge Semprun's Reworkings of Buchenwald: Social Text, Freudian Text, Kantian Text?" and co-presented the synopsis of the workshop's conclusions at the final public colloquium.
Elaine Gerbert, associate professor of Japanese literature, presented the paper, "The Humorous, the Bizarre and the Grotesque in Shinseinen Magazine" at the 20th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Humor Studies held in July at the Universidad de Alcala in Alcala de Henares, Spain.
Michael C. Roberts, professor and director of the clinical child psychology program, was presented the 2008 Martin P. Levin Mentorship Award by the Society of Pediatric Psychology at the annual convention in Boston for outstanding service in guiding and supporting students.
