CLAS promotion, tenure applications due Oct. 31
Faculty members in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who want to apply for promotion and/or tenure should submit their applications, endorsed by their departments, to the College dean's office, 200 Strong Hall, no later than 4 p.m. Oct. 31 for consideration by the College Committee on Appointments, Promotion and Tenure. KPR named station of year for 10th time in 13 years
For the 10th time in the past 13 years, Kansas Public Radio has been named the Station of the Year by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.
KPR took the top prize in the noncommercial station category of the annual awards announced Aug. 28 by Kent Cornish, president of the broadcasters association.
KPR received five first-place awards, three second-place awards, a third-place award and swept four categories. Awards will be presented during the association's annual convention Oct. 12 in Wichita.
KPR winners were: Station Promotion Announcement, First: "Right Between the Ears," Darrell Brogdon; Public Affairs Program, First: "The Sounds of Science," Joseph DiNitto and J Schafer; Complete Newscast, First: "All Things Considered" with Laura Lorson; Second: "Morning Edition" with J Schafer; Complete News Feature, First: "Lawmakers Take Up Immigration Bills," Peter Hancock; Second: "Kansas Caucuses Drew Huge Crowds," Peter Hancock; Complete Severe Weather Coverage, First: "Chapman Tornado," Bryan Thompson and Greg Echlin; DJ Personality Aircheck, Third: "The Retro Cocktail Hour," Darrell Brogdon; Editorial/Commentary, Second: "What Mothers Do: A Mother's Day Tribute," Cheryl Unruh, a regular commentator for KPR and writer for the Emporia Gazette and FlyOverPeople.net.
New research award named for former KU prof
The Consortium of College and University Media Centers will honor former KU professor John Wolf at its annual conference this year in Lawrence. In addition, the Research Award will be re-named the John P. Wolf Research Grant. The intent of the annually awarded grant is "to inspire, generate and coordinate research and scholarship that furthers the mission of the consortium." Wolf was the consortium's president, was a member of the board of directors and chaired several committees during his long membership.
Wolf taught philosophy and mathematical logic for 20 years at KU and was assistant dean of continuing education for 30 years with responsibility for the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and Fire Service Training.
University Relations lands six graphic design awards
The Office of University Relations has won six American Graphic Design Awards honoring excellence in communication and graphic design across all media, including print and Web. The prestigious national competition attracts more than 10,000 entries, and only 15 percent are honored with awards.
KU's winning entries were Consider KU, a new admissions publication for high school juniors; Discover, an admissions brochure for prospective honor students; the 2008 commencement program; the 2008-2010 undergraduate catalog; the 2008 retirement dinner program; and "Remaking Greensburg," a multi-media Web feature at www.features.ku.edu/ greensburg/.
The competition is open to advertising agencies, graphic design firms, corporate, institutional and publishing in-house departments. Some winning projects will be featured in the December annual issue of Graphic Design USA magazine, a 300-page edition with 100,000 readers, and on its Web site at gdusa.com.
Breslow to present Smissman lecture
Ronald Breslow, former chair of the Department of Chemistry, will present the Edward E. and Clarine F. Smissman Memorial Lecture on Sept. 25 and 26. Breslow, now a professor of chemistry at Columbia University, will present three lectures in two days. At 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25 he will present "SAHA, An Approved Cancer Medicine with a Novel Mechanism of Action" and at 4:30 p.m. he will deliver a public lecture titled "How Did Chirality (Handedness) that was Critical for the Origin of Life Get Started on Earth?" Both will take place at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. The latter will also include an award presentation. At 10 a.m. Sept. 26, Breslow will give a lecture called "Biomimetic Chemistry" in 1005 Haworth.
Third Art @ MRB opening with reception Sept. 26
The third annual exhibition of "Art @ MRB" opens Sept. 26 with a free reception from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Multidisciplinary Research Building. For the first time, the featured artists are all graduate students at KU. The students receive an honorarium for their efforts and will be present at the reception. Their work will remain on exhibit throughout the academic year.
"Art @ MRB" is sponsored by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the Office of the Dean in the School of Fine Arts and the Department of Art.
The art is available for viewing during normal business hours.
Event to mark new University Press of Kansas book
The Kansas Land Trust is hosting an event to celebrate the publication of "The Nature of Kansas Lands," a book filled with photos, essays and facts depicting the variety of Kansas landscapes, published by University Press of Kansas. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at The Commons at Spooner Hall.
Enjoy a short program with the authors and photographers followed by a book signing and light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by INTRUST Bank. Books will be available for purchase.
"The Nature of Kansas Lands" features a foreword by Donald Worster, Distinguished Professor of History; essays by Elizabeth Schultz, professor emerita of English; and ecosystem facts by Kelly Kindscher, associate scientist, Kansas Biological Survey After the event, books will be available through the University Press of Kansas and at local bookstores. All royalties will support the work of the Kansas Land Trust. KLT is a nonprofit organization that protects and preserves lands of ecological, scenic, historic, agricultural, or recreational significance in Kansas.
