IT'S IN THE SOIL:
William Woods, professor of geography, was quoted in an article in the September issue of National Geographic about soil in the southern hemisphere. The article discusses terra preta, or soil containing carbon. It's not known how much carbon can be stored in the soil, but Woods thinks it has great potential. "The world is going to hear a lot more about terra preta," he said.
FLOURIDE WORRIES:
John Duoll, professor emeritus of pharmacology and toxicology at the KU Medical Center, was quoted in a recent story about potential dangers of fluoride in drinking water in PRInside.com. Duoll chaired a National Research Council committee that reviewed literature showing links between fluoride and thyroid damage. "The thyroid changes do worry me," Duoll was quoted as saying.
SNAPPY SLOGANS:
Tim Bengtson, associate professor of journalism, was quoted in an AZcentral.com story about the value of memorable slogans in a campaign. He gave Ronald Reagan's "Morning in America" as an example. "Voters want a nice distilled, essential message," he said. "What a nice picture that paints. It says there's reason for optimism. Everything's going to be OK, and I'm the guy who's going to make it OK."
