Alejandra Hernandez-Castro

Current title: Recruitment coordinator, Harvest of Hope Leadership Academy, School of Education.

What that means: "Alex," as she is known in the School of Education, oversees a new program that brings 30 migrant high school students from across Kansas to attend a three-week residential leadership development and academic growth program at KU.

Notable: When assigned to the program, she had only three months to develop and successfully implement strategies to recruit 30 migrant high school students for the academy. Supervisor Stacy Mendez said Hernandez-Castro was incredibly flexible and creative in her recruitment strategies. Alex made numerous trips across the state, to lead informational sessions in schools, in families' homes, in libraries, and restaurants.

Sarah Greenwood, University Support Staff

Sarah Greenwood

Current title: Administrative associate senior, office manager, Department of French and Italian.

What that means: Greenwood is responsible for all payroll, manages the operating expense budget and the budget for 40 graduate teaching assistants and lecturers, supervises another support staff member, and hires the work study student. She also helps with faculty travel, and updates and maintains the departmental Web site.

Notable: In the summer of 2007, Greenwood coordinated the relocation of 30 GTAs from the basement of Wescoe to new offices on the second floor. She coordinated the move on several levels. She served as liaison with the College Office and the Provost's Office, and then with the movers themselves and with Facilities Operations, LAN Support Services and Information Technology for computer and telephone services.


NOTABLE ALUMS:

Two KU graduates are ranked in the International Power 50, Fortune magazine's listing of the most powerful businesswomen on the planet. At No. 1 is Cynthia Carroll, who earned her master's in geology at KU in 1982 before earning a master's of business administration at Harvard University. As CEO of Anglo American, she runs one of the world's largest independent mining companies. Carroll is scheduled to return to KU to present a public lecture at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in the Spencer Museum of Art auditorium. Linda Cook, a Shawnee native, is ranked No. 3. She graduated from KU in 1980 with a bachelor's in engineering and is now executive director of gas and power for Royal Dutch Shell.
