SCHOOL OF MEDICINE-WICHITA:

Douglas D. Bradham is the new professor and chair of preventive medicine and public health at the School of Medicine-Wichita. He will assume the distinguished professorship funded by the Kansas Health Foundation to further improve health care systems and the health of Kansans. Bradham leaves the Division of Healthcare Outcomes Research and Division of Gerontology in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at School of Medicine at University of Maryland-Baltimore.

EDWARDS CAMPUS:

The Edwards Campus is gearing up for its ÒSummer at KU in KCÓ program. Students who live or work in the Kansas City area during the summer have the opportunity to take an upper-level undergraduate course at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park. ÒFormer Summer at KU in KC students indicated they took our summer courses to keep on track with graduating,Ó said Ed Foley, Edwards Campus recruitment director. The majority of the undergraduate courses come from departments in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, including math, economics, biology, English, American studies, public administration and more. KU MEDICAL CENTER:

Patricia Thomas, chair and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, recently detailed in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons her findings that women from minority ethnicities are not regularly made aware of important preventive information about osteoporosis. Although an increasing number of women in the United States claim they are very familiar with the disease, only 25 percent of African-American women, 19 percent of Hispanic-American women and 17 percent of Asian-American women are actually very familiar with the disease, compared to 41 percent of non-Hispanic white women.

NOTABLE ALUMS:

Liliana Mayo recently received the Peruvian government's highest decoration for outstanding service. Mayo earned a master's in human development and family life in 1986 and a doctorate in developmental and child psychology in 1996, both from KU. Mayo is founder and director of the Life Span Institute affiliate Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru. Located in Lima, Peru, the institute works with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Mayo has been an honorary associate professor in the Department of Applied Behavioral Sciences since 1996 and received the Distinguished Service Citation in 2003, the highest honor given by KU.
