Greg Thomas, chair of the Department of Design, will speak April 2 at the Edwards Campus as part of the ongoing Professional Edge series. Thomas will present "Design and the Bottom Line," focusing on the role of design in everyday life.
Brian Donovan, assistant professor of sociology, and Bill Staples, chair of the Department of Sociology, have been appointed by the Midwest Sociological Society Board to edit the Sociological Quarterly, a journal that focuses on empirical research and theory in the field of sociology.
Adrian Melott and Barbara Anthony-Twarog, professors of physics and astronomy, along with Brian C. Thomas of Washburn University and Brian D. Fields of the University of Illinois, published a paper titled "Superluminous Supernovae: No Threat from Carinae" in the Feb. 1 edition of the Journal Astrobiology.
Frank Baron, professor of Germanic languages and literatures, delivered an invited lecture titled "Albert Bloch and the First German Expressionists in Chicago" at the Union League Club of Chicago on March 28.
Bruce S. Lieberman, professor of geology and senior curator of the Division of Invertebrate Paleontology at the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, was an invited plenary speaker at the Brazilian Congress of Zoology, where he discussed "The fossil contribution for the understanding of Metazoan evolution" on Feb. 20 in Curitiba, Brazil.
"Understanding Vladimir Nabokov," written by Stephen J. Parker, professor of Slavic languages and literatures and editor of the Nabokovian, is among the first of 40 paperbacks from this press slated to be republished in print-on-demand as part of a program to identify and restore to print some of its best-selling out-of-print backlist titles.
