Faculty, staff retirement dinner slated for May 29
The annual retirement dinner for faculty and unclassified staff is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 29 in the Kansas Union ballroom. Faculty and unclassified staff who have retired since July 1, 2007, and those who plan to retire before June 30, 2008, will be honored at the dinner. Staff fellows program applications now open
To assist university staff in their professional development, the Office of the Provost and an advisory committee have developed a Staff Fellows Program modeled after the Faculty Senior Administrative Fellows Program. The program allows selected staff from the Lawrence and Edwards campuses to explore higher education administration during work hours. Applications are encouraged from unclassified professional staff and university support staff. Employees urged to give blood, invite new donors
The American Red Cross and Community Blood Center is urging KU faculty and staff to give blood and to encourage students to do the same. A KU blood drive is being held March 24-28.According to the American Red Cross, only 37 percent of the population is eligible to give blood. For more information, visit www.kublooddrive.com. The drive is sponsored by the KU Blood Drive Committee.
Speaker to detail 'Power of Proscrastination'
A lecture titled "The Power of Procrastination" may sound like something you'd like to put off. But for "Ph.D. Comic" Jorge Cham, it's a fun way to help graduate students be more productive and feel less stressed.Cham, an author and teacher with a doctorate from Stanford, will speak at 5:30 p.m. April 8 in the Spahr Engineering Classroom, Eaton Hall. His presentation is free and open to the public.
According to Cham, a recent survey found that 95 percent of all graduate students feel overwhelmed, while more than two thirds have felt seriously depressed at some point in their careers.
Cham's appearance at KU is sponsored by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, the Graduate Engineering Association, the Graduate and Professional Association and the KU Student Senate.
Golf clinic aims better game, avoid injury
The Physical Therapy Department at Watkins Memorial Health Center will sponsor a free golf clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. March 28 at the southwest entrance to the health center. In the case of inclement weather, it will be held at the Physical Therapy Department on the second floor. The clinic consists of a free evaluation and free video swing analysis to help golfers improve performance and prevent injury. The clinic is open to KU students, faculty and staff. Golfers should allow 30-45 minutes. Call 864-9592 to schedule a time.
Prof starts academic spring break program
Norge W. Jerome, professor emeritus of preventive medicine and public health at the School of Medicine, has established a spring break program that has students helping others instead of lounging on tropical beaches. Jerome, a trustee of the University of Bridgeport, created a fellowship to send students to help the less fortunate annually.This year, 10 Bridgeport students have been named Norge W. Jerome Scholars.
They spent their spring break, March 8-15, building a house for a needy family in Laredo, Texas, with Habitat for Humanity.
Audio-Reader seeks volunteers for donation drive
Audio-Reader is seeking volunteers to help work upcoming donation drives for audio goods. Volunteers will work three-hour shifts with lunch or snacks provided. Volunteers may sign up for a 10 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1 p.m.-4 p.m. shift at the following donation drives: April 12, HyVee at 135th and Antioch in Overland Park; April 26, HyVee at Clinton Parkway and Kasold Dr. in Lawrence; May 10, Dillon's at Fairlawn Plaza in Topeka.Contact Sarah Hemme, (785) 864-5336 or shemme@ku.edu, to volunteer.
