PROTECTING THE PRESS:
Mike Kautsch, professor of law, recently was quoted in the Topeka Capital-Journal about legislation regarding the confidentiality of reporters' sources. "(This bill) would provide protection to journalists in a way that would enable them to contribute to public understanding of government," Kautsch said. The bill was heard in a senate committee earlier this month. At least 33 states have shield laws that say journalists don't have to reveal sources and can't be held in contempt of court for doing so.
BETTER EARLY THAN LATE:
Russ Scheffer, chair of the psychiatry department at the School of Medicine-Wichita, was quoted in a recent Wichita Eagle article about the importance of treating mental illness early. Not only would it help individuals, but it could potentially save a great deal of money and resources. "We're quite lucky that the majority of these are so treatable. Also, it has been very well-documented that for every dollar in psychiatric care, there's an offset of $2 to $3," in future care costs, Scheffer said.
RESEARCH MATTERS:
A KU grad is helping tailor cancer care to individual patients. Randy Scott, who earned his doctorate from KU, is chairman and CEO of Genomic Health, a California biotech firm. The company examines patients' genes to analyze how they might respond to certain treatments.
