Summer tuition assistance awarded to 51 staffers

Tuition assistance has been awarded to 51 KU staff members for the summer. The program is offered to university support staff and unclassified staff who have six months of full- or part-time employment at the university by the time classes begin. The program normally covers tuition for one class, up to five-credit hours.

Staff members must fill out an application to be accepted into the program. The application is available on the Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Web site, www.hreo.ku.edu, under the link for Professional and Organizational Effectiveness. Deadline for the fall is July 7. RESEARCH MATTERS:

Recent graduate Erik Nelson, a cognitive psychology major, conducted research into why people engage in dangerous, behavior such as talking on a cell phone or sending text messages while driving. Every respondent in Nelson's survey admitted to driving while talking on a cell phone, and 72 percent admitted to sending text messages while driving. "Many people understand that talking while driving is a risky behavior. However, they still do it," Nelson said.
