Cudd, Tsutsui named CLAS associate deans
Joseph E. Steinmetz, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has announced the appointment of two key administrators in the dean's office of the largest academic unit at KU.
Ann Cudd
Ann E. Cudd, director of the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and professor of philosophy, will become the associate dean for humanities for the College effective July 1. Cudd replaces Paul D'Anieri, who has been selected as dean of the University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
William Tsutsui
William M. Tsutsui, professor and chair of the Department of History, has been named associate dean of international studies for the College effective July 1. He replaces Danny Anderson, associate dean for interdisciplinary programs and area centers, who became KU's vice provost for academic affairs June 1.
"Ann's expertise and scholarship in the humanities and her experience and vision in building and leading a highly respected interdisciplinary program will be invaluable as we work to strengthen the College here at KU," said Steinmetz. "I am very pleased that she has agreed to serve as an associate dean in the College."
A member of the KU faculty since 1988, Cudd has taught courses in the philosophy of science and social science, feminism, rational choice theory and social and political philosophy. She was recognized as a KU Woman of Distinction in 2005, received a William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2001 and was awarded a Hall Center for the Humanities Research Fellowship in 1997. In addition to her administrative experience in women studies, she was director of graduate studies for the Department of Philosophy from 1995 to 2001.
Cudd earned master's degrees in economics and philosophy and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh.
"The College is in the process of reorganizing its substantial efforts and commitments in the international studies area, and I am thrilled that Bill Tsutsui has agreed to join the College staff to lead this effort," Steinmetz said. "His experience in the international arena will help us greatly to enhance our presence and reputation."
Tsutsui brings strong administrative experience to the dean's office, having been acting director of KU's Center for East Asian Studies and now serving as director of the Kansas Consortium for Teaching About Asia and executive director of the Confucius Institute at KU. He has been named faculty fellow at KU's Center for Teaching Excellence, received a William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence in 2001 and won KU's Steeples Service to Kansans Award in 2001. Tsutsui earned a master's degree from Oxford and a master's and doctorate from Princeton.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, established in 1893, is one of 14 academic divisions at KU and encompasses more than 50 departments and programs. More than 1,400 faculty members and graduate teaching assistants teach in the College, and more than 17,000 students are enrolled. Nearly half of the students at KU earn their bachelor's degrees from the College.
