In their new book, "Applied Portfolio Management: How University of Kansas Students Generate Alpha to Beat the Street,"
Catherine Shenoy, assistant professor and director of applied portfolio management, and
Kent C. McCarthy, lecturer in business, explain the critical skills it takes to become a financial analyst and an active stock investor. They cite examples from class research and results of the Applied Portfolio Management program at the School of Business. The class has averaged a 20 percent annual return, beating the NASDAQ average. in addition to drawing attention to success of applied portfolio management students at the School of Business, 50 percent of royalties from sale of the book will be returned to the Applied Portfolio Management Program fund. The book recently was featured in a list of 10 books on how to get rich by thestreet.com. Other books on the list included titles by MSNBC's Jim Cramer and fitness guru Jack Lalanne.

Debbie Vickers started out as a page for NBC in Hollywood after graduating from KU in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in general studies. But she worked her way up to talent coordinator for the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" before hitting the big time in 1994 as executive producer for Jay Leno after he took over Carson's desk. The Wichita native plans on stepping down when Leno retires next year.
