All University Teaching Summit to 'make learning visible'
"Making Learning Visible" will be the goal of the 2008 All University Teaching Summit. The event, open to all faculty and staff, is set for 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19 in Budig Hall.
Bob Thompson, dean of the Trinity College for Arts and Sciences at Duke University, will be the keynote speaker. He will discuss how Duke measures educational goals using national standardized tests of college-level thinking, reasoning and writing. He will also present a breakout session on learning about teaching through systematic measurement of student learning.
Other topics of summit sessions include: models of effective assessment for learning—from individual classes to department level; "teaching basics" sessions on leading discussions, using live distance learning, and teaching the new generation; breakouts on teaching innovations, such as teaching introductory courses for students with a range of abilities, using service-learning and understanding the new system for documenting the evaluation of teaching at KU; standardized tests and voluntary systems of accountability; peer review in real time; building consensus on department learning goals; teaching biostatistics to non-statisticians: podcasts and student groups; pros and cons of portfolio assessment; creating college classroom learning communities; making integrative learning visible: learning about antiracism across spaces; and teaching sustainability: an interdisciplinary inquiry.
To register, contact the Center for Teaching Excellence at 864-4199 or cte@ku.edu. Lunch will be provided to those who register by Aug. 14. A continental breakfast will be served in the Center for Teaching Excellence 8 to 8:20 a.m. The first session will begin at 8:30 a.m. in 130 Budig.
