Jared Llorens and Justin Marlowe, assistant professors of public administration, have been invited to the historic Minnowbrook conference addressing how public administration, public management and public service can better respond to the turbulence and critical problems of society. They are among only 40 emerging scholars across the United States invited to participate.
Steve Warren, vice provost for research and graduate studies, spoke in May in Washington, D.C., at a congressional briefing hosted by a coalition that supports the mission of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. He spoke on the work and the impact of the Kansas Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, part of KU's Life Span Institute. The briefing was attended by congressional staff, federal agency staff and representatives of the more than 100 organizations that make up the coalition.
Don Marquis, professor of philosophy, organized a panel on the subject "Is it wrong to end early human life?" May 1 at Princeton University. This year Marquis is a Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton.
David Peacocke, manager of enterprise network planning and support, and Elizabeth Pesek-Shields, manager of network support, presented "Making Sausage: Deploying Convergence in a Multi-Vendor Environment" at the International Alliance of Avaya Users annual conference held April 2 in San Diego.
Paul Mirecki, associate professor of religious studies, presented a talk titled "Ancient Jewish Gnosticism at the Intersection of Modern Politics and Religion" on April 13 at the Community of Reason conference at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Whitney Baker, KU Libraries' preservation department conservator, presented "A preliminary study of current book repair and conservation in research libraries: A survey of the landscape" at the annual meeting of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works held April 24 in Denver.
Deborah Dandridge, field archivist, received the KCAA Fellow award from the Kansas City Area Archivists during the group's spring quarterly meeting April 24 in Kansas City, Mo. The award recognizes Dandridge's pioneering archival fieldwork in documenting African-American communities in the region.
Raquel Alexander, assistant professor of business, served on a panel for the first Kansas Summit on Economic and Financial Literacy. The summit was held June 6 in Topeka and was organized by the State Department of Education and Kansas Council on Economic Education.
Cathy Shenoy, assistant professor of business and director of the Applied Portfolio Management Program, is a guest contributor for the TheStreet.com, a leading national financial news site. Bert Lyons, KU Libraries' preservation department media preservation specialist and museum studies graduate student, presented "Audiovisual heritage and the changing nature of responsible care of audiovisual items" at the American Association of Museums Annual Meeting and Museum Expo held April 28 in Denver.
Fran Devlin, coordinator-reference services/interim co-head reference/instruction unit, has joined the Lawrence Public Library Board of Trustees. Mayor Mike Dever appointed Devlin to the post April 29. Devlin's term runs until 2012. Devlin, along with Lea Currie, humanities council coordinator, and John Stratton, public administration, published their article "Successful approaches to teaching through chat" in the New World, Volume 109, Issue 5/6 (May 2008) pp223-234.
Holly Mercer, coordinator for scholar services, and Tami Albin, undergraduate instruction and outreach librarian, presented "Under the Rainbow: Oral Histories of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer People in Kansas" during the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives, Libraries, Museums and Special Collections Conference held May 8-10 in New York.
Jana Krentz, head of department for Spain, Portugal and Latin America, Watson Library, presented her paper "Integrating Information Fluency Theory into a Semester-Long Latin American Resources Course" at SALALM - Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials held June 1 at Tulane University in New Orleans. Krentz also participated in a panel discussion and presented her paper "LEEPin' Latinamericanistas!: Instructor-Student Reflections on the Online Latin Americanist Librarianship Course" at the conference.
Social sciences librarian Erin Ellis presented "A Team Approach" during the LOEX (Library Orientation Exchange) of the West held June 5 in Las Vegas.
Jon Giullian, assistant librarian for Slavic and Eurasian studies, has been elected incoming vice-chair/chair elect of the Slavic and East European Sections for the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Giullian's term began July 1.
