T. Thomas Fortune, the Afro-American Agitator: A Collection of Writings 1880-1928

AFRO-AMERICAN AGITATOR

In his new book, "T. Thomas Fortune, the Afro-American Agitator: A Collection of Writings 1880-1928," Shawn Leigh Alexander, assistant professor of African and African-American studies, gathers some of the long-time journalist's most notable works. A fiery journalist who wrote for newspapers and mainstream New York press, Fortune often wrote about America's need to live up to its promises made after emancipation. Alexander argues that Fortune, often overshadowed by his association with Booker T. Washington, deserves to be remembered as his own man.

TOPONYMS:

When Stouffer Place's 25 buildings opened in 1957, they were the first residential units built near Daisy Hill. The apartments, for married students and students with families, have one, two or three bedrooms. The complex is named for Ellis B. Stouffer, dean of the Graduate School from 1922-45 and dean of the university for six more years. Its streets are named for him and his wife, Anna. For more, visit www.buildings.ku.edu.
