Erik Perrins, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, will be editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications. As editor for the communications journal, Perrins will review articles regarding his area of specialization, modulation and signal design.

Elaine Gerbert, associate professor of East Asian languages and cultures, was among eight international representatives invited to give presentations on the state of Japanese studies in their respective countries, which took place at the inauguration of the Faculty of International Japanese Studies on Nov. 16 at Meiji University in Tokyo. Meiji University will publish her more extensive report regarding Japanese studies in the U.S. this coming spring. Gerbert also gave a presentation in Japanese regarding her research interest in Asakusa for the Asakusa Studies Symposium, which was co-sponsored by Meiji University and Taito-Ward in Tokyo.

Paul Laird, professor of music and dance, presented a paper at the symposium, American Musical On Stage and Screen: An Interdisciplinary Extravaganza in October at the University of California-Los Angeles. He also hosted, along with John Staniunas, professor of theatre and film, Musical Theatre in 1957, a symposium celebrating the 50th birthday of Murphy Hall on Nov. 9 and 10.

KU hosted the 51st annual Kansas Asphalt Paving Conference on Dec. 6. Several faculty members were involved in the conference. Bob Parson, associate professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, was chair of the conference and presented on “Geocells,” in addition to presiding over morning and afternoon sessions. Bob Honea, director at the Transportation Research Institute, gave a welcome to the conference, and Steven D. Schrock, assistant professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, was an afternoon presider. Jie Han, associate professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, was a member of the planning committee for the conference.

Sherry Williams, interim head of Spencer Research Library, gave a presentation titled “Surviving and Thriving in a Restructured Work Environment” on Aug. 30 in Chicago at the Society of American Archivists.  

Karen Severud Cook, associate special collections librarian at Spencer Research Library, was appointed an associate editor of Cartography in the Twentieth Century, the sixth volume of the History of Cartography, which is published by the University of Chicago Press.   

Lea Currie, humanities council coordinator; Fran Devlin, interim coordinator reference services; Kathy Graves, social science coordinator and librarian for business; and John Stratton, public administration, attended the Kansas Library Association Fall Conference in October in Wichita, where they each participated in a panel discussion titled Approaching Real-Time Assessment. Additionally, Tami Albin, undergraduate instruction and outreach librarian, Jennifer Church Duran, head of instructional services, and Moira Ozias, assistant director for the writing center, participated in another panel discussion for the Kansas Library Association Fall Conference on Oct. 25 titled Instructional Teams: Campus partnerships to support student learning. Albin also gave a presentation titled “From Freakin’ Out to Feelin’ Groovy: Reducing Library Anxiety in First Year Students” at the conference on Oct. 18.  

Richard Ring, bibliographer for history, presented a paper titled “The Missing Mancus and the Early Medieval Economy,” at the 46th annual Midwest Medieval History Conference on Oct. 18 in St. Louis. He also presented a paper titled “It’s a dirty job … : Selecting for Storage,” at the fall conference of the Kansas Library Association on Oct. 19.

Nikhat Ghouse, social science librarian for anthropology, indigenous nations studies and religious studies, was invited to participate in a panel on “Perspectives on Diversity” at the Emporia Diversity Initiative Leadership Institute on Oct.18 at Emporia State University. She presented on “Moving Beyond Recruitment: Acculturation and Mentoring Tools for Minority Librarians.”  

Jill Becker, public service supervisor, and Monica Claassen-Wilson, information specialist, gave a presentation titled “Enhancing Library Services through Support Staff Training: A Unique Approach” at Brick and Click Library Symposium on Nov. 2 in Maryville, Mo. A paper on the topic was published for the conference as well. Additionally, Fran Devlin, interim reference coordinator; John Stratton, business and public administration librarian; and Lea Currie, humanities council coordinator, also offered a paper titled “Not Just Q&A: Teaching Through Digital Reference,” at the symposium.  

Bozenna Pasik-Duncan, professor of mathematics, chaired a workshop program Dec. 11 in New Orleans titled Power, Beauty and Excitement of Cross-Boundary Nature of Control. The day-long workshop was part of the 2007 Conference on Decision and Control and was attended by more than 200 high school students and teachers from the area. Tyrone Duncan, professor of mathematics, and Ivan Osorio, associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at KU Medical Center, also participated.

Allan Hanson, professor of anthropology, had his book “The Trouble with Culture” included in Choice Reviews’ list of outstanding academic titles of 2007.

RESEARCH MATTERS

Cynthia Teel, associate professor at the KU School of Nursing, is conducting a survey to find the best ways for caregivers of stroke sufferers to take care of their own health. She is evaluating a program called "Self-Care Talk" - where family caregivers spend 30 minutes per week discussing issues such as diet and exercise with a nurse. Teel says participants in the program have had positive results, many realizing that taking care of themselves is vital to being able to provide good care.
