Visitors take a look at the new International House during an open house last month. The former Pinet House was remodeled and will serve as a temporary home for visiting international scholars.
International House opens doors
A building that has served KU in numerous roles over the years will now provide housing to international scholars visiting the Lawrence campus. The Pinet House has been remodeled and is now known as the International House.

The house, 704 W. 12th St., will offer lodging for anywhere from a few days to an entire semester. It is open to international scholars who are visiting KU to work with departments and research centers.
Previously, the house provided a temporary home for the Center for Service Learning and the Dole Institute of Politics.
The remodeling was funded by a donation from Tom and Jann Rudkin, who also funded the renovation of the Wilna Crawford Community Center, which serves scholarship hall residents. The International House features five bedrooms, a fully furnished kitchen, cable television and Internet access in the bedrooms and a water garden. Rates vary depending on the room and length of stay.
An open house was held shortly before winter break to offer faculty and staff a look at the new home. Alison Watkins, communications director for International Programs, led the tours and said that, in addition to the home's amenities, its location makes it unique.
"You can't beat the proximity to campus and downtown, plus it's on the KU bus route," she said.
Watkins said the response has been positive, as the rooms are almost completely reserved throughout the spring semester already.
