Pandey honored for published research

Sanjay Pandey

Sanjay K. Pandey, assistant professor of public administration, has been selected to receive the 2008 Marshall E. Dimock Award from the American Society for Public Administration. The Dimock Award is presented for the best lead article published during the previous year in the Public Administration Review.

Pandey was selected for an article he co-authored with Donald P. Moynihan of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, titled, "The Role of Organizations in Fostering Public Service Motivation." The Award will be presented at the Society's annual conference in March. The Dimock Award is the latest honor for his research contributions -- in recent years, articles he co-authored have received Best Conference Paper awards twice.

Soberon to receive service award

Jorge Soberon, senior scientist with the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Research Center, has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Service Award offered by the Society for Conservation Biology. The award honors him for "extraordinary contributions to conservation research, teaching and conservation policy in Mexico, and beyond, particularly though founding and leading CONABIO," (the national biodiversity commission in Mexico) according to the society.

DCM adds project managers, architects

Design and Construction Management has announced the hiring of several new staff members. Dennis Crupper joins DCM as a new project manager. Crupper comes to KU from the Kansas Department of Transportation. He succeeds Don Whipple, who retired last year after 35 years at KU.

Marion Paulette is a new landscape architect. She takes the place of Greg Wade, who retired last year following 27 years of service. Paulette was a practicing landscape architect in Prairie Village prior to coming to KU.

Two new architectural project managers are also joining the DCM staff. Fred Maddox was a practicing architect in Dallas, while Sam Trang comes to the university from a local architecture firm.

Nyght new chair of nurse anesthesia

Donna Nyght

Donna Nyght has been appointed chair of the Department of Nurse Anesthesia at the KU School of Allied Health.

Nyght has served as interim chair since July 1, 2007, when Carol Elliott, chair of the department, stepped down to begin phased retirement. Nyght received her bachelor's and master's degree in nurse anesthesia from KU. She has more than 25 years of experience as a nurse and 14 years as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Prior to coming to the KU Medical Center in 2004, she was with Northland Anesthesiology, Inc.

Dhillon secures Francis Fellowship

Navneet Dhillon, a researcher in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, is the first Kansas City-based scientist to be awarded a Parker B. Francis Fellowship.

Dhillon is one of 18 researchers nationwide who received the fellowships. The fellowships have been awarded annually by the Kansas City, Mo.-based Francis Family Foundation since 1976. Each fellowship is worth $150,000 over a three-year period.

Dhillon is working with other researchers at KU Medical Center to study the impact of delivering nanoparticles to the lung to prevent the development of pneumonia or tuberculosis in HIV-positive patients.

Sutphin tapped for national board

John E. Sutphin, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the KU Medical Center, was recently named a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

The voluntary board works to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a physician certification program that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.

Foster earns band director award

Robert Foster, professor of music and assistant chair of the Department of Music and Dance, recently received the Al G. Wright Award from the Women Band Directors International, the only international organization for women band directors.

Foster received the award for his continued support toward women in the band movement. Many of Foster's former female students hold notable positions conducting bands at all levels, from middle school and high school bands to college and university bands to military bands.

Foster was KU's Director of Bands for 31 years, starting in 1971. Prior to that time he served as associate director of bands at th e University of Florida.

NOTABLE ALUMS

Roseann Runte, a French scholar who earned her doctorate at KU, is the new president - and first woman executive - of Carleton University, Canada's "capital university" in Ottawa. A dual resident of the U.S. and Canada, she was previously president of Old Dominion University. She also is president of the American Council of Education's Commission on International Education and a member of the International Parliament of Cultures.
