Rick Miller, an associate scientist and chief of the Exploration Services Section of the Kansas Geological Survey, left, accepts the second KU Research Achievement Award from Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere. The award was established in 2006 and recognizes an outstanding unclassified staff researcher. The award carries with it $10,000 to further support the recipient's research activities at KU. Miller has been with the geological survey since 1987. Since 1997, he has also held a courtesy appointment as associate professor of geology.

NOTABLE ALUMS

As director of Voice of America, 1968 KU journalism graduate Danforth Austin oversees a worldwide multimedia broadcasting operation in 45 languages reaching more than 115 million people each week via radio, television and the Internet. He previously was an executive at the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones after starting as a reporter for the journal. Chancellor Robert Hemenway recently appeared on the show.
