Dennis A. Thompson
Dennis A. Thompson, 64, died July 10. He worked for Facilities Operations for 15 years. Survivors include his wife, Carlene; two daughters; and four granddaughters.
Michail "Michael" Frolow
Michail "Michael" Frolow, 83, died July 11. Frolow worked for Facilities Operations until he retired in 1989. Survivors include his wife, Nadeschda "Nadja"; two daughters; two grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law. The family suggests memorials to Holy Trinity Church in Lawrence or to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
Howard Rytting
Howard Rytting, 66, died Aug. 6. Rytting was a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry for 39 years. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kay; eight daughters; four sons; and 39 grandchildren. The family suggests memorial to the Humanitarian Aid Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, American Cancer Society or Heart of America Hospice, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
William H. "Bill" Stahl
William H. "Bill" Stahl, 89, died July 22. He was a supervisor for the residence hall food service. He retired in 1983. Survivors include his wife, Lucille; a daughter; a son; five grandchildren; and a nephew. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
RESEARCH MATTERS:
Rafe Brown, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was recently awarded a National Science Foundation grant of more than $900,000 to comprehensively survey, review and summarize the biodiversity of terrestrial vertebrates and their parasites in the Philippines. Described as a "megadiverse country" and a "global conservation hotspot," the Philippines' biodiversity is largely uncategorized. Brown's project will survey vertebrate and parasite diversity at more than 50 sites throughout the country. For more,
