Hui Zhao, professor of physics and astronomy, visited the University of Oklahoma Jan. 17 and 18 to give a physics colloquium on nanoscale spin transport and a condensed matter seminar on optical detection techniques.

Adrian Melott, professor of physics and astronomy, gave a speech titled "Biodiversity Cycles and Galactic Dynamics" at a joint physics-biology colloquium Jan. 28 at Benedictine College in Atchison.

More than 500 participants, including KU faculty and staff, registered for the 53rd annual Structural Engineering Conference held March 6 at the Kansas Union. David Darwin, president of American Concrete Institute and the Dean E. Ackers Distinguished Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, presided over the morning session and gave a presentation titled "Sustainable Development in Concrete." Stan Rolfe, the A.P. Learned Distinguished Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, was the general chair of the conference and provided the welcome address to the conference participants. JoAnn P. Browning and Adolfo Matamoros, associate professors of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, presided in the afternoon for the building structures track, and Matamoros gave a presentation on the "Peruvian Earthquake." Carol Bennett, assistant professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering, presided over the afternoon session for bridge structures.

Michael H. Crawford, professor of anthropology, delivered a keynote address titled "Settlement of the Aleutian Islands and its Genetic Sequelae" during a plenary session of the XIV Juan Comas International Congress in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. He also gave a short course on "Anthropological Genetics: Theory, Methods and Applications" at the National Institute of Anthropology and History in the National Autonomous University of Mexico, which was sponsored by the Mexican Academy of Sciences under the visiting distinguished professor program.

Diana Malott, assistant director of Student Health Services, has been selected as chair of the American College Health Association Ethics Committee. Additionally, Malott gave a presentation on "Ethics in College Health" on March 12 as part of the Central College Health Association conference hosted by Student Health Services.

KU hosted the annual Central College Health Association Conference last month. Student Health Services staff members who presented at the conference were Robin Byer, registered nurse; Patricia Denning, chief of staff; Heidi Garcia, wellness manager; Tammy Guinn, registered nurse; Carolyn Johnson, senior staff physician; Leah Luckeroth, senior staff physician; Diana Malott, assistant director of Student Health Services and ethics committee chair of the American College Health Association; Carol Seager, director; Myra Strother, senior staff physician; and Candyce Waitley, registered nurse. Other presenters from KU were: Frank De Salvo, associate vice provost for Student Success; Brianne Guilford, research assistant for the Center for Physical Activity, Nutrition and Weight Management; Jo Hardesty, director and managing attorney of Legal Services for Students; and Marlesa Roney, vice provost for Student Success.
