Mort named national academies mentor

Mark Mort

Mark Mort, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and associate curator at the Biodiversity Institute, has been named a National Academies Education Mentor in the Life Sciences for the 2006-07 academic year. The honor is given retroactively to those who "served as committed mentors" to participants at the 2006 National Academies Summer Institute on Undergraduate Education in Biology.

Teams from 16 research universities took part in the institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in June 2006. Each team worked with colleagues from around the country to develop "teachable tidbits" they planned to implement in an introductory course.

Canda, Rapp win faculty awards for Social Welfare

Ed Canda, professor of social welfare and chair of the School of Social Welfare's doctoral program, and Charles Rapp, professor of social welfare, received the 2008 Outstanding KU Social Work Faculty awards at the 58th annual Social Work Day.

Canda's previous honors include two Budig Awards for Teaching Excellence and an Outstanding Graduate and Professional Mentor award from the KU Graduate and Professional Association. This marks the fourth time Rapp has received the Outstanding KU Social Work Faculty award. He earned a Budig Award for Teaching Excellence in 2003 and a Friend of Case Management Award in 2000 from the National Association of Case Management.

D'Anieri named new dean of CLAS at Florida

Paul D'Anieri

Paul D'Anieri, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been selected as dean of the University of Florida's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He will take the new position July 1.

D'Anieri has been associate dean of humanities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 2004. In that role, he was responsible for 14 units, 200 faculty members and a budget of roughly $20 million. D'Anieri was director of the Center for Russian and European Studies from 2003 to 2004 and associate dean for international programs from 1999 to 2003.

Clifford named 'Hero in Health care' by Ingram's

Rita Clifford, associate dean for student affairs at the School of Nursing, has been awarded a Heroes in Healthcare award from Ingram's magazine.

Clifford has helped new nursing students at KU for more than 40 years and has overseen the recruitment and admission of thousands of nursing students.

Biz school faculty named to journal's editorial board

Three faculty members from the School of Business -- Laura Poppo, Vince Barker and Tailan Chi -- have been named to the editorial board of Strategic Management Journal, the top academic journal for publishing business strategy research. The journal publishes original refereed material concerned with all aspects of strategic management.

Phillips earns business staff appreciation honor

Jolene Phillips

Jolene Phillips, assistant director of Business Career Services, has received the School of Business Staff Appreciation Award. The recipient of the annual award is selected by staff members in recognition of his or her hard work and helpfulness throughout the year. Phillips began as an undergraduate adviser with the school in 1999. She began her current position in 2002.

Goosen, Miksch lauded for early childhood efforts

Two staff members at the Life Span Institute at Parsons were recently recognized at the Kansas Division for Early Childhood conference in Wichita.

Misty Goosen received the Award of Excellence. Goosen is the project coordinator with the Kansas Inservice Training Project and provides training and technical assistance to early childhood teachers across the state. The award honors an individual who has made significant contributions in publications, research, development of new concepts, new techniques for diagnosis or rehabilitation, improved psychological or education evaluation procedures, improved administrative procedures, practical application of improved teaching devices and dynamic leadership.

Peggy Miksch received the Service to the Organization Award. Miksch is a technical assistance provider for early intervention programs serving children with disabilities across the state. She also works for the Kansas Inservice Training System. The award is given to a KDEC member who has made a significant contribution to the division.

NOTABLE ALUMS:

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Lawrence Mayor Michael Dever recently proclaimed April 14-20 Elizabeth Sherbon Week in honor of the centennial celebration of her birth. Sherbon, a longtime Lawrence resident and 1930 KU grad, was a member of the Martha Graham and Jean Erdman dance companies in New York City and was Graham's teaching assistant before directing the KU dance program from 1961 to 1975. The city of Lawrence awarded Sherbon the Cultural Enhancement Award in 1993 for her contributions to the city's artistic and cultural life.
