DISTRACTION OR STUDY AID?

The iPod might be a distraction in some classrooms, but it could help capture what students might miss. A recent San Diego Union Tribune article quoted Scott Finkeldei, associate director of mediated education, on using the devices to capture lectures that students can then listen to later at their leisure. "We have found that contrary to what we expected, this didn't affect attendance," he said.

IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO TODAY:

Bill Tuttle, historian and professor of American studies, was quoted in a recent Kansas City Star article about 1968, a landmark year in the United States in terms of politics and civil and social unrest. "It's really one of those transformative years, like 1919 or 1861," Tuttle said.

NOTABLE ALUMS:

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Lawrence Mayor Michael Dever recently proclaimed April 14-20 Elizabeth Sherbon Week in honor of the centennial celebration of her birth. Sherbon, a longtime Lawrence resident and 1930 KU grad, was a member of the Martha Graham and Jean Erdman dance companies in New York City and was Graham's teaching assistant before directing the KU dance program from 1961 to 1975. The city of Lawrence awarded Sherbon the Cultural Enhancement Award in 1993 for her contributions to the city's artistic and cultural life.
