Lt. Gen. Caldwell to speak on 'changing face of warfare'

Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, commanding general of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Dole Institute of Politics on "The Changing Face of Warfare in the 21st Century." His presentation is co-sponsored by the KU-Fort Leavenworth Program and is free and open to the public.

Caldwell came to Fort Leavenworth earlier this year. He oversees the Command and General Staff College and 17 other schools and training centers throughout the country. The Combined Arms Center is responsible for development of the Army's doctrinal manuals, training of officers and integration of battle command systems and concepts.

Previously, Caldwell was deputy chief of staff for strategic effects and spokesperson for the Multi-National Force in Iraq. He has also served as commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division and as senior military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense.

"The general earned a reputation for straight talk and keen insight while spokesman in Iraq," said Jonathan Earle, interim director of the Dole Institute.

Clarence L. Burt, a 1908 civil engineering alumnus, was a major benefactor of the facility built near Learned Hall to house a small nuclear reactor to be used for research, which opened in 1962. The reactor ceased operating in 1985, and the site was cleaned to Nuclear Regulatory Commission standards in 1992. The hall now houses engineering faculty offices and the Department of Environment, Health and Safety. For more, see www.buildings.ku.edu.
