The Department of Spanish and Portuguese received the 2007 Departmental Award for Exceptional Teaching and Learning from the Center for Teaching Excellence. Chancellor Robert Hemenway made the announcement April 27. As part of the award, the department will receive $10,000 and will be honored at the KU Teaching Summit on Aug. 14. The event was sponsored by Unclassified Senate. The event offered information about campus and city organizations that use volunteers. Kallos volunteers as an usher at the Lied Center. Tabor and Nigro coordinate volunteers for Audio-Reader, KU's radio reading service for the blind and print disabled. About 60 KU staffers attended the Volunteer Fair.

Lt. Gov. Mark Parkinson and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, seated, signed the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle bill April 19 at the Edwards Campus. The bill proposes new research funding at Edwards Campus, Kansas State University and the KU Medical Center.

Richard Ring, librarian and biographer for KU Libraries, looks at books on display at the Hall Center for the Humanities April 18. The event celebrated books written or edited by KU authors within the past year. More than 40 books were on display, and many of the authors were on hand to discuss their projects with the public.

The Adams Alumni Center is named for K.S. “Boots” Adams, who went to work for Phillips Petroleum to earn money to complete his KU business degree and retired as chief executive officer. When the building opened, executive director Dick Wintermote requested that the address be changed from 1246 Oread Ave. to 1266 Oread in honor of Phillips 66 executives who were alumni and donors to the project.
