Forrest C. "Phog" Allen, star of coach James Naismith's 1905-06 basketball team, was named head coach himself in 1920 and became one of the most successful and influential coaches in the country. When his long campaign for a fieldhouse for his basketball teams was successfully concluded in 1955, the debate over whether to name the facility for the game's inventor, Naismith, or for coaching legend Allen didn't last long.

KU HISTORY
On March 18, 1968, Robert Kennedy kicked off his presidential campaign with a pair of speeches at KU and K-State. Classes were canceled for his appearance, and a crowd estimated at 20,000 filled Allen Fieldhouse to hear his speech. Kennedy's speech was interrupted 38 times by applause, cheers and catcalls.
