Officials of Continuing Education Fred Pawlicki, executive director, Marvin Hunt, assistant dean, and Jim Peters, marketing director, gave the presentation "Revenue Generation and Entrepreneurship" Feb. 22 at the Continuing Higher Education's regional conference in Manhattan.
Marvin Hunt, assistant dean at Continuing Education and director of KU's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, recently earned a doctorate in educational studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For his dissertation, he investigated participants through open-ended interviews, which allowed them to freely explore their inner thoughts about learning throughout life.
The book "Positive Psychology: The Scientific and Practical Explorations of Human Strengths" by Shane Lopez, associate professor of psychology and research in education, and the late C.R. Snyder, a former KU professor of psychology, received the SAGE Publications Best New Book of 2006 award.
Philip Barnard, associate professor of English, presented "Victor Séjour's Count of Haag: Passing in the Paris of Napoleon III?" Feb. 3 at the Association for African-American Historical Research and Preservation Fourth Annual Black History Conference, Seattle University, Seattle.
Bryan Thompson, journalist for Kansas Public Radio, was one of only 50 journalists and editors in the country selected to participate in a medical reporting seminar at the National Institutes of Health, April 12-14 in Bethesda, Md. The three-day course is called "Medicine in the Media: The Challenge of Reporting on Medical Research"
The young-adult novel "Life As I Knew It," by Randi Hacker, outreach coordinator for the Center for East Asian Studies, has been chosen as one of the New York Public Library's Books for the Teen Age 2007. Hacker and other authors whose books were chosen for this honor were recognized March 24 at the Celeste Bartos Forum at the New York Public Library, New York City. Alice Hoffman was the keynote speaker.
Elizabeth Asiedu, associate professor of economics, has been elected vice president of the African Finance and Economics Association, the premiere research association devoted to African development.
Yo Jackson, associate professor of applied behavioral science, was recently appointed programming chair for the American Psychological Association for Division 53 of the Society of Clincial Child and Adolescent Psychology for the 2007 convention in San Francisco. Ric Steele, associate professor of applied behavioral science, was appointed editor for Progress Notes, the newsletter for the division 54 Society of Pediatric Psychology for the American Psychology Association.
Jim Lichtenberg, associate dean and professor of education administration, and two co-authors have been selected to receive the American Educational Research Association Division E Distinguished Research Award for their 2005 article that appeared in Psychotherapy Research. The article was titled "Associations between working alliance and outcome in solution-focused brief therapy and brief interpersonal therapy."
