Butler named distinguished lecturer

James Butler Jr., a senior scientist at the Kansas Geological Survey, has been chosen as the 2007 Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer by the National Ground Water Association. The association is the country's largest professional society for water scientists.

As part of the lectureship, Butler will describe his work to colleagues at academic institutions in the United States and around the world.

Butler has been at the Kansas Geological Survey since 1986. He is also an associate of the Center for East Asian Studies and a courtesy professor in the Department of Geology.

Woods awarded for Latin American work

William Woods, professor of geography, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Carl O. Sauer Distinguished Scholarship Award for outstanding Latin American scholarship by the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers. The award will be presented at the conference's meeting May 31 - June 3 in Colorado Springs.

Recipients are scholars who are leading authorities in specific research topics and geographic areas of Latin America.

Legal Services for Students adds staff

Laura Diaz Moore

Legal Services for Students has hired Laura Diaz Moore as staff attorney. Diaz Moore comes to KU from the Northwest Justice Project in Washington.

Diaz Moore has a bachelor's in political science from the University of Michigan and a law degree from DePaul University College of Law. She was admitted to the Kansas Bar in 2006.

She has also been licensed and practiced in Washington, Wisconsin and Illinois in a wide variety of practice areas.

Marquis to teach course at Princeton

Don Marquis, professor of philosophy, has been named the Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University for the 2007-08 academic year. He will teach a course cross-listed in the Center for Human Values and the Philosophy Department in the spring semester.

Chen receives CAREER award

Xue-wen Chen

Xue-wen Chen, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, has received a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. The award recognizes promising junior faculty who will likely become future academic leaders.

The multiyear award funds recipients' research programs and the integration of their research and teaching. Chen is generating advanced computational techniques that examine and analyze immense biological data sets.

Aube to join HHS study section

Jeff Aube, professor of medicinal chemistry, will serve as a member of the Department of Health and Human Service's synthetic and biological chemistry A study section, in the Center for Scientific Review. His term will run from July 1 to June 30, 2011.

Study sections review grant applications submitted to the National Institute of Health, make recommendations on the applications and survey the status of research in their field of science.

Former KU professor hired to lead Haskell

Haskell Indian Nations University has named former KU professor Linda Sue Warner its next president.

Warner was an assistant professor in the education policy and leadership department from 1990 to 1993 and was director of a grant project in the philosophy department in 1992.

Do joins Student Health Services

Mai Do has been named marketing director of Student Health Services. In the position, she will serve as the primary media contact, create promotional marketing material and work to increase awareness of Student Health Services.

Do comes to KU from GlynnDevins Marketing and Advertising in Overland Park, where she was an account executive. She holds bachelor's degrees in journalism and communication studies, both from KU.

Lynch to step down as director of bands

John Lynch, director of bands, will resign at the end of the semester to take a job at the University of Georgia. Lynch came to KU in 2002.

There will be a national search to find a successor, said Larry Mallett, chair of the Department of Music and Dance. John Paul Johnson, professor of music and dance, is chairing the search, and two band students are on the committee.

The Lied Center of Kansas is named for Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. They were the parents of Ernst F. Lied, who attended KU from 1923 to 1925 and played on the university's golf team. After his death, his estate established the Lied Foundation Trust, which oversees the performing arts center at KU and a similar one at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
