TOPONYMS

The Lied Center of Kansas is named for Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. They were the parents of Ernst F. Lied, who attended KU from 1923 to 1925 and played on the university's golf team. After his death, his estate established the Lied Foundation Trust, which oversees the performing arts center at KU and a similar one at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

KU HISTORY

The Jayhawks entered this year's NCAA basketball tournament with a No. 1 seed and hopes to vindicate the stinging first-round losses of the previous two years. Though the first-round eliminations are fresh in the minds of fans, KU basketball historian Blair Kerkhoff calls the loss to Wichita State in the 1981 NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 one of the 10 most memorable losses in the team's history. NOTABLE ALUMS

Ruth Patrick has been called the "den mother of ecology." Patrick has worked for decades with diatoms, which are single-cell algae that are present in nearly every body of water. She discovered diatoms can be the prime indicator of water quality, because the cells readily absorb pollutants. She also devised a well-known model, the Patrick Principle, for determining a body of water's health by evaluating all life in it.
