Jazz colloquium set for March 30, 31
The fourth annual Interdisciplinary Jazz Colloquium will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 30 and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31 at the Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.
Kevin Whitehead, jazz critic for National Public Radio's "Fresh Air," author of "New Dutch Swing" and lecturer on jazz-related studies at KU, will deliver a talk titled "Death to ‘the Avant-Garde,' Revisited," which questions the viability of the avant-garde as a category, at 9:15 a.m. March 30.
Also on March 30, Fred Ho, composer, performer, author, activist and founder of the Afro-Asian Ensemble, will deliver the keynote address, "Imagine the Impossible! Perpetuating the Avant-Garde in African American Music," at 2:10 p.m.
The first day's programming will conclude with a solo baritone saxophone concert by Fred Ho at 5:30 p.m. in the Spencer Museum of Art auditorium; a post-concert dialogue will follow Ho's performance.
The colloquium is free and open to the public.
The event is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, KU Center for Research, Hall Center for the Humanities and the Spencer Museum of Art.
