Marc Greenberg, chair of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, participated in the second annual International Guitar Festival, held May 30-June 4 in Iowa City. Greenberg played in master classes on the Russian seven-string guitar with artists Vladimir Markushevich (Moscow), Dmitri Illarionov (Moscow), Tariel Berimeladze (Tbilisi), John Schneiderman (University of California-Irvine) and Nadia Borislova (Puebla, Mexico).
Bob Clark, vice chancellor of the Edwards Campus, was featured as one of three metro Kansas City education leaders in Ingram's Magazine's special education publication. Ingram's invited Clark to share his view on Kansas City's higher-education climate.
Sarah Hargus Ferguson, assistant professor of speech-language-hearing, presented the paper "Acoustic correlates of talker-reported clear speech strategies" at the 154th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America, held June 3-8 in Salt Lake City. Meredith A. Poore, a doctoral student in speech-language-hearing, was one of the co-authors.
Marvin Hunt, assistant dean of Continuing Education, presented "Symbiosis and Innovation in Three Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes and Three Universities: Mutual Interests in Older Adult Students" at the International University Continuing Education Association Conference in April in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Hunt also presented "The Nexus Between Qualitative Lifelong Learning Research and Marketing" and "Building a Sense of Community Among Members: A Case Study of Online Message Boards" at the National Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes Conference in April in Braselton, Ga.
Chris Johnson, financial aid system administrator for student information systems, presented a talk titled "The Dialects of the Germans from Russia" at the 38th International Convention of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia on June 15 in Hays.
A media guide written by Brandon Holtz, assistant sports information director, and Beau White, assistant director for athletics, received third place by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Bill Klein, assistant director of IT, presented "The Advanced Network Services Registry" during the Great Plains Network annual meeting June 1 in Kansas City.
Brian Rosenblum, scholarly digital initiatives librarian, presented "Building Scholarly Publishing Services in the academic Library" during the 2007 Colorado Academic Library Summit held June 1 in Denver. Rosemblum also presented "Libraries as Publishers: Partnering with Faculty to Improve Access to Scholarship at the 2007 Czech and Slovak Library Information Network Conference held June 4 in Stupava, Slovakia.
Ada Emmett, librarian at Anschutz Library, and Judith Emde, electronic resources/technical services librarian at Watson Library, published a paper titled "Assessing Information Literary Skills Using the ACRL Standards as a Guide" in the 2007 spring edition of the Reference Services Review.
Becky Schulte, university archivist, participated in the "Successful Management of Academic Electronic Records" panel at the Annual Midwest Archives Conference held May 3 in Columbus, Ohio. Schulte also participated in the "Application of Copyright Laws to Historical Records" panel at the Archival Access Issues Symposium at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum held May 24 in Abilene.
Rich Ring, librarian at Watson Library, chaired two sessions in honor of KU professor emeritus Richard "Skip" Kay. He also organized and presided over the Saturday night humor panel "Psuedo Society" during the 42nd International Medieval Congress.
Susan Craig, head of the Art and Architecture Library, recently won the Worldwide Books Award for Electronic Resources, presented by the Art Libraries Society of North America. The award recognizes her decade-long effort in creating the "Biographical Dictionary of Kansas Artists (active before 1945)," a KU Scholarworks e-book featuring 1,700 Kansas artists.
Jane Irungu, Global Awareness Program coordinator, and Charlie Bankart, assistant dean of International Programs, presented "Creating an Integrated Student and Global Awareness and Curriculum Internationalization Program" on May 29 at the annual NAFSA: Association of International Educator conference in Minneapolis, Minn. Bankart and Chris Jensen, language specialist at the Applied English Center, presented "The Least We Owe Our International Graduate Students and Post-Docs" on May 31. Staff members from International Programs, the Applied English Center, International Student and Scholar Services and the Office of Study Abroad attended the conference.
Barbara Barnett, assistant professor of journalism, will receive the Mary Ann Yodelis Smith Award for Feminist Scholarship from the Commission on the Status of Women of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at its August convention in Washington, D.C.
Doreen Fowler, professor of English, presented the paper "Flannery O'Connor and the Racial Uncanny" at the annual meeting of the American Literature Association, held May 23-26 in Boston. She also chaired the session "New Directions in Faulkner Studies."
