John Stubbs Brushwood, 87, died May 27. He was a Roy A. Roberts Professor of Latin American Literature from 1967 until he retired in 1990. Survivors include his wife, two sons and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to KU Endowment, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Edwin A. Bracken

Edwin A. Bracken, 81, died May 20. He was an administrative officer for 11 years and retired in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, a brother, two sisters and two granddaughters. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Etta "Elaine" Vick

Etta "Elaine" Vick, 84, died May 31. Vick worked in the physics and astronomy department for more than 10 years. Survivors include her husband, a son, two daughters, 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association in Topeka or First United Methodist Church, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Cindy Lee Smith Jackson

Cindy Lee Smith Jackson, 45, died June 4. She worked at KU's research facility at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. Survivors include her mother, her father and stepmother, three brothers and three sisters. Wilma Doris Lathrom

Wilma Doris Lathrom, 85, died June 13. Lathrom worked as a clerk at the student unions. Survivors include a son, a sister, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Paul E. Gruber

Paul E. Gruber, 75, died June 22. He was a maintenance employee. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, a brother, a sister and two granddaughters. The family suggests memorials to the Disabled American Veterans, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Caroline Jane Nabors

Caroline Jane Nabors, 79, died July 4. Nabors worked for the Office of the Chancellor and the Kansas Geological Survey. Survivors include a son, two daughters and a brother. The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Hospice, Lawrence Humane Society or the KU Endowment Scholarship Hall Fund, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

William S. LaShier Jr.

William S. LaShier Jr., 73, died July 1. La Shier joined the KU faculty in 1965 as an assistant professor and retired in 1998 as a professor of teaching leadership. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, a son and four grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to KU Endowment or the American Cancer Society, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

NOTABLE ALUMS

KU grad Cynthia Leitich Smith has become a well-known writer in and around Austin, Texas. The Library of Congress recently announced she is among 70 writers chosen to participate in the seventh annual National Book Festival. Smith has written several books for young readers. She graduated from KU and the University of Michigan Law School. She won the 2001 Wordcraft Circle Award for children's literature, but her latest novel, "Tantalize," is a dark fantasy.
