NET NARCISSISM
Nancy Baym, associate professor of communications studies, was quoted in a recent Chicago Tribune article about a study stating that people born after 1982 are the most narcissistic generation in recent history. Social networking sites are thought to have much to do with it. She said young people are often failing to target their messages. "They're thinking about 'Who am I and how can I show myself to the world?' Baym is quoted saying about the generation. They're not thinking about parents, teachers, employers and all these other people who can see this."
BILL OF CLEAN HEALTH
Nina Shik, a nurse and infection-control professional at KU Hospital, is quoted in a recent article in Newsweek about reducing infections caused by unclean hospitals. "Is it clean? Is it cluttered? Can you see dust on the floors? Ask yourself, 'Does it appear to be a safe hospital?'" Shik offered as advice for determining if a hospital is as clean as it should be.
THE NEXT WARREN BUFFETT
Business Week asked several business and financial experts who they thought could be a suitable replacement for billionaire investor Warren Buffett when he retires. Mark Hirschey, the Anderson W. Chandler Professor of Business, was among those asked. His answer: "Bruce Berkowitz, Fairholme Capital Management's founder, would be terrific. He has a wonderful record and knows the culture as a longtime Berkshire stockholder."
