Initiative will expand wireless Internet to nearly all academic areas

KU recently announced a two-year, $2.6 million initiative that will quintuple wireless coverage in academic areas on the Lawrence Campus. The plan, developed by KU's Student Senate, Provost and Information Services unit, will increase wireless coverage from its current rate of 20 percent of classrooms, labs and other selected academic spaces to nearly 100 percent in those spaces by December 2008.

The first three buildings on the priority list, which was developed in conjunction with the Student Senate, will be Wescoe Hall, Fraser Hall and Strong Hall. By the end of the project, there will be approximately 100 new public areas added to KU's wireless network, with 32 new buildings receiving their first "KU Wireless Zones." The project will add 700 new wireless access points, in addition to its current 200, for a total of about 900 wireless access points. KU's Student Senate was instrumental in making the wireless expansion initiative possible, providing half of the funding, with KU matching the student contribution.
