KU IQ
Four students were recently nominated for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, regarded as the premier undergraduate award to encourage excellence in science, engineering and mathematics. Since Congress established the scholarship program in 1986, KU has produced 41 winners.
TOPONYMS
In February 1948, KU alumnus and physician Franklin D. Murphy, 32, was appointed dean of the School of Medicine and in 1951 he succeeded Deane W. Malott as chancellor. Murphy, who left KU in 1960, was a lifelong arts patron, and he advocated strongly for a badly needed music and theatre building; when it was dedicated Nov. 10, 1957, it was named for him.

Alumnus George Brown blazed a new trail in American politics. Brown was the first African-American elected lieutenant governor in the United States (1974) and first African-American elected to statewide office in Colorado.
