Construction to close some parking near stadium

Construction of a large stormwater sewer from Potter Lake to 11th Street will close dozens of parking stalls from Feb. 19 to mid April, the university has announced. Work is scheduled to be done before the Kansas Relays events April 19 and 20.

The work will close about two-thirds of Lot 59, a 281-stall student parking lot located between Potter Lake and Memorial stadium.

The work will start at Potter Lake but eventually extend along Maine Street to 11th Street. Eventually Maine will be closed and a temporary road will be built to allow access to the parking lot. Students who park in Lot 59 are encouraged to find parking in Lot 94, located east of Memorial Stadium.

The new stormwater sewer will be 4 feet, 6 inches in diameter, replacing an old inadequate 8-inch pipe, and provide needed flood protection.

Murphy, who left KU in 1960, was a lifelong arts patron, and he advocated strongly for a badly needed music and theatre building; when it was dedicated Nov. 10, 1957, it was named for him.
