Adrian Melott, professor of physics and astronomy, presented the colloquium "Biodiversity Cycles and Galaactic Dynamics" March 1 at Ohio State University. He spent the following week visiting the departments of geosciences and of astronomy and astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University, the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C. and the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and a seminar at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. A paper co-authored by Melott, "Modeling Atmospheric Effects of the September 1859 Solar Flare," has been chosen for highlighting in a press release by the American Geophysical Union.
Kathy Graves, librarian, co-authored a chapter in "The Role of the Library in the First College Year." Graves wrote "Research on Student Retention and Implications for Library Involvement."
Lea Currie, librarian, co-authored a chapter in an award-winning book titled "Centers for Learning: Writing Centers and Libraries in Collaboration, Publications in Librarianship."
The award is the Ilene Rockman Publication of the Year.
Monica Claassen-Wilson, library associate, was one of six national recipients of the Sage Library Support Staff Travel Grants to ALA in Washington, D.C. She will be recognized June 24 at the ALCTS awards ceremony.
Sarah Goodwin Thiel, digital imaging librarian, recently published her book, "Build It Once: A Basic Primer for the Creation of Online Exhibitions."
John Colombo, professor of psychology and co-director of the developmental program, has been named associate editor of the journal "Child Development." His term begins in July.
Jana Krentz, librarian, will present a paper titled "Incorporating Information Literacy into the Curriculum: New Frontiers in Research Methodology Instruction for Latin Americanists" during the Seminar on the Acquisitions of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) on April 30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Michael Fox, associate director of the Research and Training Center on Independent Living, was a visiting scholar at the Monash University School of Medicine in Malaysia and the National University of Singapore in March through a grant from the Christopher Reeve Foundation. Fox spoke to medical students and doctoral students in public policy.
David Vertacnik, associate professor of design, had an exhibit in the Indiana State University art gallery earlier this month. He is an 1975 alumnus of the university. Vertacnik employs a wide range of materials in his pieces, including ceramics, cast bronze, industrial and agricultural objects. Many of his sculptures are designed for outdoor sites, created with elements that move freely in space.
Diana Carlin, dean of the Graduate School and International Programs, recently co-chaired an international symposium in Amsterdam on the impact of European changes in higher education and on relationships between the United States and European universities. Carlin led the symposium as part of her responsibilities as chair of NASFA: Association of International Educators' international task force on the impact of the Bologna Process.
Mike Wright, project manager for information technology, presented "Project Management: From Managing Costs to Managing Risks" as part of a seminar March 12 during the EDUCAUSE Midwest Regional Conference in Chicago.
Philip Barnard, associate professor of English, presented "Victor Séjour's ‘Count of Haag': Passing in the Paris of Napoleon III?" at the AAHRP fourth annual Black History Conference, Feb. 3 at Seattle University.
Kristin Bovaird-Abbo, lecturer of English, presented "Chaucer's Arthurian Creations: ‘The Squire's Tale,' " at the Annual Mid-America Medieval Association Conference, Feb 24 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
