Frederickson earns social equity award

H. George Frederickson, the Edwin O. Stene Distinguished Professor of Public Administration, has received the Lifetime Contributions to Social Equity Award for 2007.  The Award is given by the Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Presentation of the award took place at the sixth annual Leadership Symposium of the Standing Panel on Social Equity of the congressionally chartered National Academy of Public Administration held in Richmond, Va. in cooperation with Virginia Commonwealth University.  In the award citation it points out that in 1972, "Frederickson published the original paper upon which much of the contemporary social equity perspective in public administration rests. Over the past 35 years he has been the leading voice in the service of fairness and justice in the operations of government."

Emde, Krentz win awards from library

Judith Emde has been named the 2007 Budig Distinguished Librarian and Jana Krentz received the Mary McCorison Rosenbloom Teaching Award, Lorraine Haricombe, dean of libraries, has announced.

The Gretchen and Gene A. Budig Award recognizes recent achievements in professional service and scholarship as well as reputation among professional colleagues. Since joining KU Libraries in 1986, Emde has served as a reference librarian, instructor and science bibliographer before embarking on her current role.

Krentz, librarian II, is the first recipient of the new Mary McCorison Rosenbloom Teaching award, which recognizes the design and implementation of exemplary instructional service program. Krentz has extensively promoted and incorporated information literacy instruction within Latin American studies and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and she is solely responsible for the instruction of a required course in the Latin American studies master's degree program. Krentz joined KU Libraries in 1996 and has been bibliographer for women's studies, religion and Germanic studies. She currently coordinates International Programs and Cultures and is the head of the Spain, Portugal and Latin America department.

Crowe to enter phased retirement

William J. "Bill" Crowe, Spencer librarian, will enter KU's phased retirement program in October. At that point, he will become special assistant to Lorraine Haricombe, dean of libraries.

Crowe has been in leadership positions at KU for almost two decades. He was dean of libraries from 1990 to 1999 and was KU's first vice chancellor for information services from 1996 to 1999.

Since 1999, Crowe has led the Kenneth Spencer Research Library staff through a number of changes to promote improved access to the library's renowned collections.

Discussions regarding interim leadership of Spencer library are under way, and an announcement will follow in the coming months.

Page named new KU Hospital CEO

Bob Page

The KU Hospital has announced that Bob Page, currently the hospital's chief operating officer, will succeed Irene Cumming as president and chief executive officer of the hospital this summer. Cumming announced recently that she will become president and chief executive officer of the University HealthSystem Consortium.

Page holds a master's degree from Saint Louis University. He came to health care through what was then Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. In 1986, Page joined Saint Louis University to head up their medical center internal audit function. He returned to Jewish Hospital in 1990 and was a key member of the leadership team. In 1996, Page joined the KU Hospital as vice president for organizational improvement. In 2000, he was promoted to senior vice president and chief operating officer for the hospital.

KC mayor-elect is former KU lecturer

Former KU lecturer Mark Funkhouser was recently elected mayor of Kansas City, Mo. Funkhouser was a lecturer in the Department of Public Administration from 2002 to 2006.

Funkhouser defeated long-time Kansas City councilman Alvin Brooks.
