KU IQ

The beauty of Mount Oread has inspired countless students, faculty and even noted artists over the years. Poet Walt Whitman described the view from the hill as "Stretching out on its own unbounded scale, unconfined. . . Combining the real and ideal, and beautiful as dreams."

TOPONYMS

The Bridwell Botany Research Laboratory on west campus, built in 1965, was funded by a gift from Texas cattle breeder Joseph S. Bridwell, who was interested in research into developing better strains of grasses and legumes for cattle. The building houses the Ronald L. McGregor Herbarium, named in honor of the longtime director who oversaw a vast expansion of KU's plant collections. In addition to more than 350,000 pressed specimens and a slide collection, the building houses a botanical library.

KU HISTORY

Although it had existed under various names for nearly 70 years, the KU School of Nursing did not have full school standing until April 1, 1974. Before then, it had fallen under the School of Medicine. The designation was part of a larger reorganization of the KU Medical Center. Through the reorganization, the School of Allied Health was established and the School of Medicine was reconfigured. For more, visit www.kuhistory.com
