Agrawal to chair federal transplantation committee

Gail Agrawal

The U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services has appointed Gail Agrawal, dean of the School of Law, to chair the Federal Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation.

The committee works to enhance organ donation, ensure organ transplantation is grounded in the best available medical science and increase confidence in the organ transplantation system by assuring it is as effective and equitable as possible.

Agrawal's term will be four years. She was originally appointed to a three-year term on the committee by then-secretary Donna Shalala when it was formed in 2000.

Agrawal is the committee's third chair and the first that is not a transplant surgeon.

Organ transplantation has long been a part of Agrawal's legal and academic career. She has represented the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency and a medical center with a kidney, heart and liver transplant program. She also served on the board of the American Liver Foundation.

In the academic realm, Agrawal has lectured on topics related to the National Organ Transplantation Act and the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act.
