KU MEDICAL CENTER

The medical center is inviting anyone interested in learning more about the human body, new treatments and therapies, and the latest advances in medical research to join faculty for a four-week "Mini-Medical School" educational series.

Classes will be from 6:30-9 p.m. each Tuesday for four weeks in Rieke Auditorium, located in the Orr-Major building, 3901 Rainbow Blvd. Free parking is available across the street. To reserve a seat, call (913) 588-1227 or visit kumc.edu/som/minimed.

The following is the Mini-Medical School schedule and topics: Oct. 3 – Stem Cell Research 101 and Bone Marrow Transplantation.

  • Oct. 10 – Breast Cancer and Lung Cancer.
  • Oct. 17 – Alzheimer's disease and Childhood Obesity, Diabetes and Exercise.
  • Oct. 24 – Parkinson's disease and Arthritis.

KU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE-WICHITA

Dean S. Edwards Dismuke and James Early, clinical associate professor of preventive medicine and public health, have been appointed to the Governor's Council on Fitness. They are among 24 members who will serve as role models, encouraging Kansans to make healthy changes in their lives and encourage increased physical activity, healthy diets, healthy lifestyles and tobacco use prevention.

A 33-year-old transformer malfunctioned early Sept. 15, causing a power outage at Wescoe Hall. The building was closed for the day, and classes were cancelled. The building houses 320 classes per day, and 620 faculty and staff work there. The cost of replacement is estimated at $120,000.
