NOTABLE ALUMS
Navy Rear Admiral Mark Heinrich recently took command of the Defense Supply Center in Richmond, Va., the primary source for nearly 1.25 million repair parts and operating supply items supporting 1,300 major weapons systems. Heinrich holds a master's degree in business administration and a master's of science degree in petroleum management from KU.

A 33-year-old transformer malfunctioned early Sept. 15, causing a power outage at Wescoe Hall. The building was closed for the day, and classes were cancelled. The building houses 320 classes per day, and 620 faculty and staff work there. The cost of replacement is estimated at $120,000.

Blake Hall opened in 1895 and was named in honor of Lucien I. Blake (1853-1916), the physics and engineering professor who persuaded the legislature to spend $50,000 to build it. He left KU in 1906 to continue pioneering, lucrative research in electricity, X-rays and underwater wireless communications.
KU HISTORY
The Kansan, the campus newspaper that eventually became The University Daily Kansan, made its
debut Sept. 17, 1904. The first headline read "Great Mass Meeting," referring to the establishment of the paper. "Students of KU Demand a Semi-Weekly - Faculty in Too - Every One Pledged to Support it."
