Timmermann to give inaugural lecture
Barbara Timmermann, Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, will present her inaugural lecture, "The Natural World: A Wealth of Chemical Diversity for Drug Discovery," at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.
Clinical Child Psych program honored
The American Psychological Association presented an award to the Clinical Child Psychology Program at KU for "Distinguished Contributions for the Education and Training of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Psychologists" at its August convention in New Orleans.Professors Yo Jackson, Ric Steele and Michael Roberts and numerous graduate students and program alumni were present to receive the award, consisting of a plaque and a check for $3,500.
Provost to speak at brown bag luncheon
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere will speak to unclassified staff at a brown bag luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Big 12 Room of the Kansas Union. Lariviere has been asked to discuss the role of unclassified staff at KU and what unclassified staff can do to make KU a better place for students, faculty and staff.The event is sponsored by the Unclassified Senate Professional Development Committee and is open to all unclassified staff.
Center to focus on German biz language
The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and the Center for International Business Education and Research have announced the formation of a Center for German Business Language to serve students from KU and area institutions and high schools in Kansas.Housed in the German department in Wescoe Hall, the center's mission is the teaching, training and testing of German business language for undergraduate and graduate students and teachers of German. Rex Clark and Jim Morrison, lecturers in the German department, are co-directors.
Friis named a Pipeline 'innovator'
Lisa Friis, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was one of 10 individuals named to the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. Pipeline's charter class of "innovators." The program selects individuals who have shown a commitment to technology innovation in Kansas and matches them with best-in-class training, resources and mentors.Friis was recognized for teaching a multidisciplinary approach to biomedical product development course and her involvement in the Entrepreneurship Thematic Learning Community.
Professorship offers $5,000 for faculty
Beginning in 2007, a teaching professorship in writing will provide a $5,000 award each year to a faculty member in education or journalism.The Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing will be awarded to faculty members who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the teaching of writing. Former KU Chancellor Gene Budig and his wife, Gretchen, provided lead support for the $100,000 professorship fund at KU Endowment.
KPR named 'station of the year'
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters named Kansas Public Radio "Station of the Year" in the noncommercial category for the eighth time since 1996.KPR swept four complete categories. Awards will be presented during the association's annual convention Oct. 23.
Promotion, tenure review seeks input
The Faculty Executive Committee Task Force on Promotion and Tenure is seeking input on its comprehensive review of current standards, procedures and practices regarding promotion and tenure.Comments may be e-mailed to the Office of University Governance at govern@ku.edu, and a discussion draft and comments are available at www2.ku.edu/~unigov/P&TCover.html. The task force will also hold several open meetings to discuss the topic. The dates, times and locations will be posted at the aforementioned Web site.
